Apparently Ah Cacao Chocolate Café, Playa del Carmen, will feature on the TV show "GEM - Gringo en México". In Mexico the program will be shown this weekend, not sure about other locations but I suppose it will be in a show about Playa del Carmen/Riviera Maya.

Impact of Disposable Cups

As you know Ah Cacao cares a lot about the environment and so we would like to explain we currently use thin-wall polystyrene cups instead of paper cups in Ah Cacao Chocolate Café:

They are more comfortable and secure for our guests.
Their impact on the environment can be considered to be less than paper cups.
There aren't any 'greener' options available to us right now.

Why do thin-wall polystyrene cups have less environmental impact?

Although paper cups are made of a renewable resource (wood), their manufacture currently consumes more non-renewable resources than thin-wall polystyrene. This is due to the amount of energy required to produce paper from wood.
Less damaging chemical substances are released during the lifetime of a thin-wall polystyrene cup than a paper cup.
Recycling a thin-wall polystyrene cup requires less energy than recycling a paper cup (though currently neither are commonly recycled).
Thin-wall polystyrene takes up less space in landfills as its volume is mainly composed of air. Even though paper cups are potentially bio-degradable, this process is very slow in an inaerobic landfill.
Thin-wall polystyrene cups are lighter and therefore use less energy in the transportation (all disposible cups suitable for commercial use in Mexico are currently made in the United States).
It is usually not necessary to "double-cup" hot drinks when using thin-wall polystyrene cups.

Impacto de Vasos Desechables

Actualmente en Ah Cacao Chocolate Café usamos vasos de poliestireno delgado en lugar de papel porque:

Son más comodos y seguros para nuestros huespedes.
Consideramos que su impacto sobre el medio ambiente es menor que el de los vasos de papel.
Actualmente no contamos con opciones alternativas que quizás tendrán un impacto menor.

Porque tienen menor impacto los vasos de poliesterino delgado?

Aunque los vasos de papel están hechos de un recurso renovable (madera), hoy en día se consumen más recursos no renovables durante su fabricación que los vasos de poliestireno delgado. Eso debido a las altas cantidades de energía que se requiere para convertir la madera en papel.
Los químicos liberados durante la vida de un vaso de poliestireno delgado son menores y menos dañinos que los vasos de papel.
El reciclaje de poliestireno delgado tiene menos impacto que el reciclaje de vasos de papel (aunque hoy en día es raro que cualquiera de los dos vasos sea reciclado)
El poliesterino delgado ocupa menos espacio en un relleno sanitario que el vaso de papel por que está hecho principalmente de aire. Aunque el vaso de papel es degradable, en la práctica este proceso es muy lento en un relleno sanitario debido a la falta de aire.
Los vasos de poliestireno son más ligeros que los vasos de papel y entonces utilizan menos energía en su transporte (todos los vasos adecuados para uso comercial actualmente son fabricados en los Estados Unidos).
No es necesario usar dos vasos para las bebidas calientes.
